INTERVIEW June 22,2017
My name is Naya Zamiel, i'm a corresponsal from México, and this is my first interview for this amazing page. For last my firm in all notes is #BloodyNaya
Well, after my presentation, go to the interview. On this occasion i talk to Sonya Scarlet, vocalist of the Theatres des Vampires. Enjoy...
Naya Zamiel: First of all, I want to thank you for the opportunity you are giving me, I appreciate you very much, you are really great. I am particularly excited about her return to the stage, making me feel the young vampire she used to be a few years ago. But let us begin at the beginning, for those young souls who have just begun in their music.
Sonya Scarlet: Thank you Naya for your kind words and your support!
NZ: How does this magnificent project start? What led them to opt for the name Theatre des Vampires? Beyond making an appointment to vampire chronicles.
SS: Everything started more than 20 years ago... Time run so fast when you love something.
Theatres des Vampires was formed in 1994 . All the members since the beginning expressed a special fascination with vampires and anything connected to them.
During our career, we were first primarily influenced by symphonic black metal, but later tended to including Differing influences, including: classical music, opera, darkwave, deathrock, gothic rock and several industrial subgenre. Throughout this stylistic deviation, a few characteristics of our band's music have remained consistent; melancholic atmospheres and dark lyrics, vocal stylings akin to gothic metal, and our vampiric image. I joined the band in 2000 ad backing vocalist And Since 2004 I remained the solo vocalist and front of the band.
The name "Theatres des Vampires" was inspired by a fictional location created by Gothic fantasy writer Anne Rice of The same name. Rice's Theatres des Vampires is a Parisian theatre in which vampires pretend to be mortal actors.
Their performances consisting of the feeding on mortals disguised as part of a play and staged in front of human Audiences. The location is mentioned in several of Rice's books, including Interview With the Vampire and The Vampire Lestat. We all have a great passion for vampirism and I think our kind of gothic metal is perfectly linked with this attitude…in all our albums we create an obscure atmosphere…sometimes more symphonic..sometimes more violent but you can always feel a melancholy that drives our songs...
NZ: How do you influence Bram Stoker's work in his music?
SS: Obviously Dracula from Stoker is a kind of un -holy bible for all those Who love licterature and vampirism and that book is an important part of my background. But I love lot of different writers and novels About Vampires .
NZ: What vision do they have about vampirism? Is TDV a purely artistic proposition or does it have philosophical touch?
SS: I believe in the research of eternal life And I love the concept to do it throught the blood that Represent the life itself. There Are different form of vampirism...We can meet "Vampires" everyday without reconise them... the worst one suck your energy, not your Blood... anyway.
I love the classical image of the pale And seductive vampire and this romantic vision of Vampires started With William Polidori Novel "the vampire".
He transformed the figure of the vampire from an animal without charisma and without personality, a cruel and hideous monster into a dandy, a creature full of charm, seductive, beautiful , pale And misterious.
NZ: We know there have been some changes in the lineup during so many years of career, but in spite of that you are still making excellent music. Has it ever become difficult to keep the project afloat?
SS: Yes, we had many changes in the line up since the beginning of Times I think and it's never easy to find the perfect balance between all members, people often change their point of view over the years and they Have different priorities and interests. It's really difficult to Have the same members in a band for over 20 years. It' s not so easy starting Everything from the beginning With a New member cause friendship is One of the most important thing for us and We want that the New member join us as musician and as a friend as well. We want to create a strong feeling between all of us. This is our Secret to keep our project alive and strong after all these years. Now there will be another important change in our line up but We will publish the news later.
NZ: Let's talk about the new album. I will be honest, wait 5 years for me was an eternity, even I got a tattoo hoping to invoke them again hahaha!!! How was it back to the studio, start composing again together, after so long?
SS: It Was surely great! after a long stop of more than 3 years there have been many changes within the band, We found a new balance And a new strong energy with a renewed line up. We wanted to show it with a bloody new album with a powerfull sound! Our producer Christian Ice and me, together with the band, worked hard everyday on the new album. After our split with Fabian we have started to arrange the new songs from a different point of view, no more starting from the keyboards but from my lyrics, arranging on them and on the rhythm of my words the whole album. So, what came out was a really powerful sound with great guitar’s riffs , surely different from the previous works cause it was different the message we wanted to give to to our fans but still keeping our style... cause mind and heart are always in the vampiric mood ...
NZ: What inspired you to make this new album that is a jewel?
SS: The name of the new album is inspired by a room, different from all others, with colored walls and bars on the windows. A room described as hell on earth by the inpatients of the infamous Pennhurst asylum in Pennsylvania, where for decades adults and children with severe mental problems where hidden away from the public eye. A sad but alas true story, and the patients themselves renamed that room - with its brightly colored walls from which nobody could leave - Candyland.
Candyland is a journey through the corridors of the asylum, through the dread of those who - locked away inside the bulwarks of Pennhurst - were left to live in the lone company of their deepest and most harrowing fears, told through their words, accompanied by their cry of desperation. Never to be understood. Never to be free. Never to be truly alive. Each song has got its strange and scary story.
NZ: What are you most loving about this new stage in the band?
SS: I love Candyland and I like its strong sound. it is a joining link between our past and our future. We Are already thinking About a New album. Actually We Are slowly working on it.
NZ: What changes have you noticed on the scene during all these years? Do you think that it has evolved or been stagnant?
SS: I think the scene is different for each country . In Italy the situation is not so good, some clubs Are sadly closing cause there is not enough people that go to see concerts even if We have lot of very talented bands! I hope the situation will get better in next future. About other countries I see music power in strong and people still love to Go To concerts. May be nowadays people prefer to Go to festivals to see their favourite bands playing.
NZ: About your recent presentations How did you feel when you stepped back on stage?
SS: I missed the stage. It Was a great suffering for me to quit for a while cause I love to play our live songs so much and having a direct contact with our fans. Our music is my life and my passion.
Was great bring on stage again, I'm full of energy and ready fot the next shows!
NZ: Could tell us where they will be presenting soon. Do we have any hopes of a visit in France? Latin America too?
SS: We Have some gigs planned in Italy, Holland , Russia and probably a latino America tour really soon ! We really would like to play again in France, I hope it will be possibile in the next future!
